Ryan Alcantara was born in the Philippines and at the age of
16 he and his family moved to New York City.  Being there in
the 80’s really sparked his creativity for dance and fashion.
With an interest in travel,  Ryan once considered work in the
travel industry.  But, his love for fashion drove him down
another path instead.  “When I was at Fashion Week in NY I
met a hairstylist outside of one of the tents.  She told be about
the exciting lifestyle, the perks and the success you can gain
from being a Fashion Editorial Hairstylist.  Since I love fashion
and the models so much I knew it would be a great career for
me.”

After attending the beauty school Head People in upstate NY
he trained and apprenticed at Lepine Salon where he
eventually became a professional hair stylist. Throughout his
career he has developed a taste for a classic look with a
modern edgy twist.  “In the salon you have to be realistic in
what your client can get away with regarding hairstyles.  It
also depends on their lifestyle and career.  But, in photo shoots
I am able to be more creative.”  His inspirations in his craft are
grasped from the work of makeup artist Pat Mcgrath and the
hairstyles of Garren & Guido Palau.

Today, Ryan works for Salon Bobbi and Guy at Ward
Warehouse.  After moving to Hawaii almost 5 years ago, Ryan
now calls this his home.  On a typical day in the islands you can
find Ryan relaxing on a beach somewhere, or taking a stroll
down Kalakaua Ave.  He also isn’t one to shy away from all the
nightlife around town.  “I love living here in Hawaii.  It’s so
cosmopolitan, yet not chaotic.”
